Introduction |
|
|
|
I am an instructional designer, writer and editor based in
the In
addition to my design, writing, and editing capabilities, I bring these key
strengths to every project I work on: A Big Picture View No matter
what my assigned role is, I view every project at the macro level. This big
picture perspective enables me to design individual project elements with the
whole project in mind. It enables me to develop style guides and templates
that provide direction for multiple elements, and to anticipate questions
before they become problems. It enables me to validate other team members’
materials against my own to ensure that all project elements work together.
And, it often prompts me to volunteer as template developer, continuity
editor, and ‘keeper of the glossary.’ A Streamlined
Development Process With
every project, I try to employ rapid prototyping, especially electronic rapid
prototyping, to streamline the development and approval process. With rapid
prototyping, an ‘online concept’ replaces the outline and storyboard for up-front
approval of electronic appearance, structure, function, and content (it also
provides development templates). Online drafts allow enhancement of
navigation and coding as well as development of content. They also give
clients real samples to review. Because all drafts are electronic, an online
pilot can be conducted at any time during development. The rush to produce a
working technical version at the end is eliminated because operational issues
are addressed every step of the way. In short, rapid prototyping helps get it
right the first time. As a writer, I believe it’s important to pay
attention to detail and to serve as the ‘first user/validator’ of a process
or procedure. I see clarity as the goal of technical communication and
believe that simplicity is the key to clarity. As a training program designer, I believe it’s important to
remember that learning is learning, no matter what the delivery method. A
poor design can’t be improved using bandwidth. And, all training should ask
students to apply what they have learned. As an editor, I believe you only have one
chance to get it right the first time. Editing for quality assurance is a
process that should take place on every document during every step, from
design through production. |
